Ipsilateral second metatarsal island osteocutaneous flap for lower extremity reconstruction

A clinical case suggesting a new application of the vascularized second metatarsal is presented. This bone was used as an island osteocutaneous flap, based on the dorsalis pedis and tibialis anterior arteries, to treat an ipsilateral small tibial defect. It can be expected that this type of second metatarsal transfer will be effective in treating non-unions, pseudoarthroses, and small defects of the tibia and the distal third of the femur provided both tibial arteries are patent.
