My aim in this paper is to establish Jim's divided self in Lucky Jim (Amis 1976), at least until he accepts his own identity, in other words his social status. The conflict in his personality can be observed in his speech in which he uses two codes: restricted and elaborated (Bernstein 1986), and also in his gestures which come as a psychological compensation for the hostile world in which he lives. Since the class conflict is shown through language, my analysis will be based on sociolinguistics.
