摘要
The gradual phasing out of conventional power plants by the increasing integration of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) introduces various challenges to secure and stable grid operation. Inadequate frequency response following a significant disturbance is one of the critical concerns for the operation of RES-dominated power systems. Diminishing inertia due to the RES-driven displacement of conventional generators consequently jeopardizes the frequency stability of the power system. However, synchronous condensers, existing, refurbished from retiring power plants, or newly installed ones, have a significant potential to support RES-dominated power systems. This paper examines the role of synchronous condensers as a potential solution in enhancing the frequency performance of power systems with high shares of large-scale solar PV generation. Several case studies are carried out on IEEE standard test systems and real-life Gujarat state power system for various system scenarios using DIgSILENT PowerFactory.
