Monovalent copper luminescence in glasses of base composition LaMgB5O10 and LiLaP4O12

Parallel investigations of monovalent copper luminescence for Cu+-doped LaMgB5O10 and LiLaP4O12 glasses are reported. The spectroscopy and the excited states dynamics were investigated as a function of copper concentration and temperature. The broad band blue emission observed for both types of glasses arises from isolated Cu+ ions whereas an additional orange-red fluorescence, detected only in the phosphate glasses is attributed to (Cu+)(2) pairs. The stimulated emission cross-sections calculated from spontaneous luminescence data are respectively : 4.05 10(-21) cm(2) for the berates and 2.26 10(-21)cm(2) for the phosphates. The characteristics of the luminescent properties are discussed as regard to the glass composition.
