Evaluation of rigid body properties from frequency response data

Accurate estimation of rigid body properties of a structure is very important in dynamic analysis, control, optimisation and vibration reduction problems. These may arise when a system has a complicated shape and the location of its centre of gravity as well as the mass and inertia tensor cannot be easily determined by using purely theoretical tools; in such cases it may be convenient to use the readily available experimental dynamic data and to apply appropriate methods to evaluate those properties. In the present work a parametric identification method is investigated, allowing for the simultaneous estimation of all the necessary ten parameters, using information from measured frequency response functions in a defined frequency range. The accuracy of the estimated parameters is evaluated by applying the method to a couple of case studies. An important tool has been developed to act as an indicator factor, which can help both on the validation of the results and on the diagnostic of possible problems.
