摘要
We address the question of whether there exist specific systems for processing objects in primates. We do so by examining the development of recognition of faces in human infants in order to discover the more or less specific mechanisms that contribute to the emergence of adulte like face recognition competence. Faces were chosen as they seem the best candidate for a specialized object processing system. In our discussion of this issue five kinds of data are presented. (1) The relationship between Conspec (Johnson and Morton, 1991) and the neonate's competencies in individual face processing, (2) the changes in individual face processing competencies around the age of two months, (3) the functionnal hemispheric asymmetries in pattern and individual face processing during the first year of life, (4) the cortical pattern of activation elicited by visual attention to faces in 2-month-old infants as indexed by PET scan using 015 labeled water, and (5) the performance in children who suffered unilateral brain damage before or immediately following birth.
