Republic of Tatarstan: interethnic relations

Republic of Tatarstan: interethnic relations (by Elena Bondarenko) looks into the relations of over one hundred national groups (mainly, Russians and Tartars) inhabiting the above republic. Empiric data are taken from sociological surveys, statistics and content analysis of mass media. Centuries of ethnic, cultural, and social interaction of the two most numerous groups in today Tatarstan influenced decisively the contents and trends in interethnic relations in the Republic. Acquisition of Tatarstan statehood could not but give rise of a radical national upsurge, social, economic, cultural and language issues. Discussing those issues, defining factors of the rise of ethnic self-consciousness, and role of elites in the conflicting situations, are the foci of author's attention.
