The genus Flamella Schaeffer, 1926 (Lobosea, Gymnamoebia), with description of two new species

The genus Flamella Schaeffer, 1926 now contains 5 species, which differ in a number of features. Locomotive morphology with a characteristic pseudopodial pattern indicates that flamellians are typical lobose amoebae, close to members of the family Flabellulidae Bovee, 1970. Thus, the systematic position of this genus within the family Flabellulidae, initially proposed by E.C. Bovee, but not recognised later by EC. Page, is confirmed. The pattern of locomotion suggests independence of the genus Flamella Schaeffer, 1926 from the genus Paraflabellula Page & Willumsen, 1983. Two new freshwater species, F. aegyptin (the first known cyst-forming flamellian) and F. lacustris are described.
