摘要
The notion that parenting skills of persons with disabilities are qualitatively different from those of persons without disabilities is an oversimplification of a complicated issue. Although empirical evidence refutes opinions about the deleterious effects of parental disability on families and children, legal and other professional life-altering decisions have been based on a presumption of deficiency in parental role functioning among this population. This article reviews research evidence from the past 15 years of the influence of physical, cognitive, or sensory disabilities on parental role functioning. Methodological problems associated with some studies are discussed along with implications for counseling practice.
