This article traces Shaw's modifications of Samuel Butler's evolutionary theory, demonstrating that Shaw diverged significantly from the thinking of the author he credited as his inspiration. The difference between Shaw and Butler emerges from opposed understandings of the role of embodiment-a condition that Shaw's play cycle Back to Methuselah seeks to transcend altogether.
