Top discovery results at CDF

摘要
In March 95, we announced the existence of the top quark. This is based on 3 top search analyses using a 67 pb(-1) data sample of p (p) over bar collisions at root s = 1.8 TeV collected with the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF). In the dilepton analysis, we find 7 events with a background of 1.3 +/- 0.3. In the lepton + jets analysis with a b identified via a Silicon VerteX detector (SVX), we find 21 events with a background of 5.5 +/- 1.8. In the lepton + jets analysis with a b identified via Soft Lepton Tagger (SLT), we find 22 events with a background of 14.7 +/- 2.2. In conclusion, we find a signal consistent with t (t) over bar decay into WWb (b) over bar, but inconsistent with the background prediction by 4.8 sigma. In addition, we measure the top quark mass to be 176 +/- 8 (stst) +/- 10 (syst) Gev/c(2), and the t (t) over bar production cross section to be 6.8(-2.4)(+3.6) pb using SVX channel only.
