Quasiperiodic structures can be grown from a relevant seed by adding individual atoms one by one using a single local rule. These rules result from a frustration of the local point group of symmetries by a condition on the distances between pairs of atoms. This gives, for the first time, a physical growth mechanism which, in addition, fits the structure of real quasicrystals. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science B.V.
