摘要
In order to produce beams of multicharged ions, both gases and metals, accelerators are now widely using electron cyclotron resonance ion sources (ECRIS). ECRIS are known to be highly reliable, low-cost technology devices, which can deliver high intensity ion beams of intermediate charge states in continuous and pulsed modes of operation. The basic principles of ECRIS are here shortly summarized. The design, main features and performances of existing ECRIS are then presented. Finally the present trends of development and prospects for ECRIS are discussed.
