Further study of the pi(0)pi(0) system produced in 38-GeV/c pi(-)p charge-exchange collisions

New results from a partial-wave analysis of the pi(0) pi(0) system produced in the charge-exchange reaction pi(-)p at a 38-GeV/c pion-beam momentum are presented. Experimental data has been collected at the IHEP 70-GeV proton accelerator with the multiphoton hodoscope spectrometer GAMS-2000. The S wave at low momentum transfer exhibits two bumps, at 1.2 and 1.7 GeV, and two dips, at 1.0 and 1.45 GeV. In the tensor sector, the f(2)(1270) and f(4)(2050) mesons are produced at low \t\ via the dominating one-pion t-channel exchange with small absorption. At high \t\, their production proceeds mainly through the natural spin-parity exchange. Our data do not show any sign of the D-0-wave f(2)(1810) resonance claimed in the pi(0) pi(0) system by Cason et al. [Phys. Rev. D: Part. Fields, 1983, vol. 28, p. 1586]-the upper limit on its production cross section is set to be less than 1/50 of the f(2)(1270) resonance.
