摘要
It is known that damage to victims, environment, historical and cultural heritage of collections, materials and negative impacts both of socioeconomic nature, are considered the main consequences of fires in buildings. The objective of this article is to present a case study of a Federal Public Institution of Higher Education in Chemistry and to highlight the importance of attendance to active protection through portable extinguishers, automatic showers (sprinklers), fire hydrants, illumination and emergency signalling, the control of smoke movement and of the passive protection that can be the compartmentation and the protection of metallic structures. The methodology used was the application of the legislation of CBMERJ and Regulatory Standard 23 (NR-23) to evaluate aspects related to a real case study. Results and Discussions: Elaboration of a diagnosis in a Federal Institution of Higher Education located in Rio de Janeiro. Passive fire protection allows a significant extension of time, both for population evacuation, rescue and firefighting, reducing fire and smoke propagation. Conclusion: This IFES currently does not meet the legal requirements regarding fire prevention, being necessary immediate intervention to safeguard the safety of users in case of an eventual fire.
