Precipitation in an Al-Cu-Mg alloy containing trace addition of In

摘要
The influence of trace additions of indium (In) on the aging of an Al-Cu-Mg alloy has been studied by hardness testing and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Hardness results show that In additions markedly accelerate the aging process of the alloy at 190 degrees C, although it only slightly increase the peak hardness of the alloy at this temperature. During artificial aging at 190 degrees C, both theta'[metastable Al2Cu(theta)] and S (Al2CuMg) precipitates form uniformly in the matrix. The formation of these precipitates is dominated by heterogeneous nucleation at In-precipitate:alpha(Al) matrix interphase boundaries.
