摘要
A series of mainly one-dimensional compression tests has been carried out to understand the compression properties of sands by examining particle crushing strengths and the distribution of the microscopic stresses for individual particles in the soil matrix. In a uniform material such as glass beads a large proportion of the particles do not carry any load or only a small load. As the shape of the grain becomes more angular and the surface roughness increases then the load distribution through the matrix becomes more uniform.
