A new six-coordinated Cd(II) polymer {[CdL2(H2O)(2)]center dot(H2O)}(n) (1) (HL = N-nicotinoylglycine) was synthesized with N-nicotinoylglycine, Cd(NO3)(2)center dot 4H(2)O, NaOH and 2,2'-bipyridine as raw materials. Complex 1 was characterized by elemental analysis, IR and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The results show that each Cd(II) ion is six-coordinated in a distorted octahedral geometric configuration by two O atoms of two different L ligands, two coordinated O atoms of water, and two N atoms of two different L ligands. Complex 1 forms a 1D chained ring structure due to the bridging effect of O, N atoms of different L ligands. The fluorescent properties of complex 1 in a solid were also investigated.
