Scattering of plane waves from layered media with a rough interface

Scattering of acoustic plane waves from a multi-layer medium with a rough interface is studied theoretically and numerically in the present paper. The solution is based upon a multi-layer wave reflection model and a single rough interface scattering model. A Gaussian and random roughness is assumed for the rough interface. It turns out that the rms-height (h) and the correlation-length (L) of the rough interface are the two governing parameters for the scattered wave field. The scattered wave field is compared with the basic reflection pattern from a multi-layer model without interface roughnesses. The present model forms a good analogy to a layered seabed or a layered ice structure.
