A new high intensity contactor for deoxygenation of water

A new concept for high intensity deoxygenation of water by gas stripping is described. An enhanced acceleration held is created by water injection and promotes mass transfer without the complication of mechanical rotation of the contactor. Stripping gas is bubbled through a rapidly rotating layer of water. Experimental results for fresh and salt water are presented for an initial and improved version of the contactor. The latter gives values of H-OL and K(L)a markedly better than those for a packed column. Performance was particularly good on salt water due to its suppression of bubble coalescence. K(L)a values over 300 times higher than those measured on a packed column were achieved. H-OL varies over a wide range of gas flows G as H-OL proportional to G(-n) where n is near 0.6. Energy consumption, whilst higher than in a packed column, is not out of line with that for other recent deoxygenation techniques. Aspects requiring further research are discussed.
