Surveying the track ahead is a critical component of the train-driving task. However, all in-cab instruments require the driver to look away from the track, and new in-cab signalling systems may increase the time that drivers spend 'heads-down'. Head up displays (HUDs) have a proven track-record in the aviation and automobile sectors, allowing pilots and drivers to access information with minimal diversion of attention from the outside world. The research reported in this paper was funded by the Rail Safety and Standards Board and assesses the concept that similar benefits may be realised by the installation of HUDs in train cabs. In the study, a HUD was fitted to a high-fidelity, full-task train simulator. Train drivers drove with the HUD, and provided both objective data and subjective feedback on the perceived benefit to the train driving task. Their commentary suggested clear potential value in fitting HUDs to rail vehicles. Particular merit was associated with presentation of speed and signalling information in the line of sight. A significant reduction in driver workload was also demonstrated which may have potential performance or safety benefits. Compatibility with the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) was not directly assessed during the study, however a clear opportunity exists for presenting ERTMS information on a HUD rather than on the driver's DMI head-down display.
