Passive weather radar offers a means of obtaining 3-dimensional wind field measurements by augmenting existing radar installations with spatially distributed receive modules. Previous multistatic weather radar networks have relied on GPS-disciplined oscillators and communications infrastructure between the transmit and receive sites. This paper describes the implementation of a system that instead uses the direct path signal from the transmitting radar in order to achieve synchronization. This approach reduces cost and risk by allowing the receiving systems to be installed with no modification to the transmitter. An illustrative set of weather observations collected by a passive radar prototype using radiation from an operational WSR-88D is presented.
