Product Line Management: The Right Tool for Today's Fleet

The United States Coast Guard's surface fleet maintenance management structure has evolved considerably over the last three decades. The most significant organizational change in recent years was a comprehensive centralization effort coupled with a new asset portfolio governance structure called "logistics modernization". This change in management structure streamlined the Service's approach to all aspects of fleet maintenance and logistics. The new construct draws its strength from the principle of enterprise product line management, vice relying on regional management regimes. The positive results of this change include increased responsiveness to the needs of operational commanders, enhanced decision support for senior leadership, and improved stewardship of resources.
