Dealing with spatial detail in a virtual reality environment

摘要
Over the past 2 years, we have developed the KarmaVI system, which is a Virtual Reality interface on a standard GIS database that supports visualisation, manipulation and editing of the GIS and CAD data in a virtual environment. In this virtual environment, spatial detail plays a major role. Higher detail of the data will increase the illusion of being present in a computer generated 3D world but will lower the rendering speed of the virtual world, which will decrease the illusion. In this paper, we discuss several techniques, implemented in KarmaVI to maintain a high rendering speed without distorting the illusion of presence in the virtual world.
