Automated pattern measurement for circularly-polarized antennas using the phase-amplitude method

This article describes an increasingly popular procedure for measuring circularly-polarized (CP) antennas. Known as the phase-amplitude method, this procedure is particularly well suited for implementation in an automated antenna measurement system that uses an I/Q receiver to compare the received signal from the antenna under test to a fixed reference signal. An outline of the measurement setup and methodology is provided, along with a demonstration of the technique. A common pitfall in CP antenna measurement is also discussed.
