Detection of Helicobacter bizzozeronii and Helicobacter felis in gastric biopsy of dogs

No Helicobacter pylori Helicobacter (NHPH) include different species such as H. suis, H. felis, H. bizzozeronii, H. salomonis, H. heilmannii sensu stricto (s.s.), H. cynogastricus and H. baculiformis, some of which colonize the stomach of dogs and humans. The identification of these species in dogs is important due to the evidence of the zoonotic potential of some of them, like H. felis y H. bizzozeronii, despite of its low prevalence. There is no records about the prevailing species in dogs of the Region or Country, and about the characteristics of the affected population. Gastric biopsy specimens of 50 dogs between 2 months and 14 years of age, 10 pure-breed and 40 mixed-breed, 29 males and 21 females, were collected. The aim of this work was to detect by PCR, HNHP in dog's gastric biopsy and to associate them with breed, age and sex of the dogs. H. bizzozeronii was identified in 28% of the samples and H. felis in 4% of them. Although the risk profile was determined and that the most commonly infected dogs were male, older than 3.8 years and mixed breed, there is no significant statistic evidence.
