Core models, coordinators, and connectors in the dynamic modeling and simulation of multiphase systems

摘要
The dynamic modeling and simulation of large-scale multiphase systems can be very time-consuming given the large number of equipment models that may be required. An approach is presented in which complex equipment models involving two or more phases are assembled by combining core models for each of the individual phases through the use of a coordinator. The main function of a coordinator is to determine the fraction of the total volume occupied by each phase. Connectors are used to handle such tasks as the transfer of mass and energy between the phases as well as heterogeneous kinetics. The efficacy of this approach is demonstrated for three types of equipment: liquid-liquid mixers, multi-fluid heat exchangers, and a fluidized-bed coal gasifier. The work to date indicates that a large variety of equipment models can be constructed from a relatively small set of core models and connectors.
