摘要
We present the characteristics and a preliminary optical and mechanical design for a Wide Field Multi-Object Imager and Spectrograph for the VLT aimed at extending the VLT observational parameter space and providing a competitive second generation VLT instrument. It is a classical slit (mask) spectro-imager, covering the J, H and K bands, with a possible extension to the 5 mum domain, offering a 8 x 8 arcmin(2) field of view and a spectral resolution up to 6,000 for a 1 arcsec slit. A cryogenic mask exchange unit allows to exchange a similar to 12 mask magazine in similar to 4 hours during daytime.
