The interplay of environmental and genetic factors accounts for marked variability in liability to psychiatric disorders. Over the post two decades, the relative contribution of genetic determinants has been the object of intense research and has offered valuable pathophysiological insights. While the advancement of techniques and strategies for gene finding has clearly benefitted psychiatric genetics, recent work has alerted to the importance of clinical judgement. The present review introduces to both established and future methods in the field, and summarizes data on the genetic backbone of selected psychiatric disorders.
