Undifferentiated bovine respiratory disease (UBRD) or shipping fever is a major health problem for the beef industry. The economic impact of respiratory disease includes therapeutic (treatment and supportive) costs; labor costs for treatment; production inefficiencies because of reduced gain, poorer feed conversions, and reduced carcass quality; and losses related to chronic illness and mortality. This column examines production losses caused by UBRD and reviews metaphylactic use of tilmicosin phosphate for disease control.
