Effect of the strain rate on the tensile strength of a copper shaped-charge jet

The data on the penetration depth of a rotating shaped-charge jet were used to estimate the strength of the material of a copper jet formed from a ''low'' conical liner with an apex angle of 120 degrees under the action of centrifugal forces. The estimates 0.07-0.15 GPa obtained are close to the static yield point of deformed copper. The jet strength, which is estimated using the length of the fragments formed upon breakup of a rotation-free jet owing to the axial velocity gradient, attains 1-1.5 GPa at a strain rate of similar or equal to 2.10(4) sec(-1).
