Esmolol HCL (ESM) is a drug with an ultra-fast and short duration action. Its beta-1 adrenergic receptors blocking capacity is responsible for its therapeutic activity, that rapidly reduces the force and rate of heart contraction. To assure the quality, safety and efficacy of ESM, it is important to develop efficient and accurate analytical methods for its quantitative determination in pharmaceutical dosage forms. A new UV spectrophotometric method and a fast, ecofriendly HPLC method were developed and applied in the analysis of esmolol in pharmaceutical injection. The proposed chromatographic method generates negligible quantities (40 mu L min(-1)) of organic waste material. Moreover, the impact of background pH on protonalion state of esmolol in UV region and correlation with absorption spectra is discussed.
