Why is optimum design not much practiced in industry and how can we make it more usable?

摘要：
The reasons why optimal design in mechanical engineering is not well used are discussed and directions of an integrated design software system presented. Pro/DS-Structure developed based on this philosophy is illustrated. It is based on a parametric CAD platform and approximate design sensitivity analysis is used for robustness, versatility and user-friendliness.
