Management of the suicidal patient with schizophrenia

Individuals with schizophrenia are at increased risk for attempted and completed suicide. Management of the suicidal patient with schizophrenia requires a multi-dimensional assessment of the individual's biopsychosocial functioning and resources. Treatment of co-morbid symptoms and syndromes such as psychosis, depression, and substance abuse reduces the risk for suicidal behavior. interventions described include hospitalization, outpatient crisis programs, and family treatment.
