The new science foundation sponsored workshop on future directions for compiler research and education in 2007 drew recommendations from the discussions among the presenters and attendees. The 50th anniversary of IBM witnessed the release of first optimizing compiler, and technology and to discusses the future over the next 50 years. The compiler field has transformed the landscape of computing, even as important compilation problems remain as new challenges have appeared. The parallel programming, developing secure and robust software and verifying the entire software stack are of great practical importance and rank among the most challenging problem in computer science. Certain challenges facing the field can be solved by community wide effort and funding agencies and industry must be aware of the importance and complexity of the challenges.
