MOBM: A METHODOLOGY FOR BUILDING PRACTICAL DOMAIN ONTOLOGIES FROM DATABASE INFORMATION

Existing ontology development methodologies are divided into two approaches. One is to develop an ontology from database information; the other is to construct an ontology using domain terms according to a top-down method, bottom-up method, middle-out method, or hybrid method. To effectively represent organizational knowledge of an ontology, we have presented a mixed ontology building methodology (MOBM) that combines the characteristics of both approaches. The MOBM first creates a kernel ontology as the core using various types of database information, including database schema, and then completes the ontology by applying the top-down method and the bottom-up method, respectively.
