AgNPs@Ag(I)-AMTD (AMTD: 2-amino-5-mercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole) metal-organic gel-nanocomposites was prepared and used as a SERS (Surface Enhanced Raman Scattering) probe for the detection of Hg2+. On the basis of the studies on SEM, TEM, XRD analysis, the possible mechanism is attributed to the formation of Ag amalgam in the gel network. The sensor responds a good linear relationship ranging from 5.0x10(-7) to 9.0x10(-6) mol.L-1. It exhibits excellent selectivity and sensitivity up to 1.5x10(-7) mol.L-1. Furthermore, it can also be used as a scavenger for the removal of Hg2+ from water.
