A study on the suppression of vortex shedding from a square cylinder near a wall

A study has been carried out to explore vortex shedding phenomena from a square cross-section cylinder as a function of gap height to a solid boundary, and to examine the utility of a second-order turbulence scheme for simulating this phenomenon. Simulation and experimental results are compared to show that the computed flow field produces the correct trends in the global parameters and the velocity field distribution. It is shown that the essential physics leading to suppression are correctly captured. It is also shown that the suppression of vortex shedding cannot be explained simply by a vorticity-cancellation mechanism due to vorticity generated at the wall.
