摘要
Consolidation is an important step in the processing of composite materials, It allows the formation of a continuous polymer matrix phase and the removal of voids. The composite material studied in this research consists of rovings composed of commingled glass and polypropylene fibres woven into a 2-2 Twill weave. The consolidation of this material as well as mats composed of unidirectional and woven glass rovings were studied using a specially designed tool mounted on a compression press. Fibre volume fractions with and without polymer were measured as a function of applied compressive stress. The stress - glass volume fraction behaviour of commingled mat was observed to be similar to that of woven glass roving. The flexural properties of consolidated mats were also studied as a function of glass volume fraction.
