3D images of sintering phenomena at the micron scale

摘要
Most experimental characterizations of sintering phenomena such as neck formation, grain rearrangement and grain growth are currently obtained from measurements performed on 2D sections of polished samples. Now, 3D information on microstructures can be obtained using X-Ray Computed Microtomography techniques (CMT). Moreover, huge improvements have been done recently on the resolution scale. It is now conceivable to follow microstructure evolution of a powder during its sintering at the micron scale. A glass powder compact was heat treated at 700degreesC and CMT measurements were performed on that sample after different sintering times. The same volume area was identified on the successive recordings and the 3D images were numerically reconstructed. Description of the real 3D microstructure evolution during sintering is proposed. From these 3D experimental data, some parameters such as porosity or neck size can be determined as well as their evolution during sintering.
