Technical Committee 2 of the International Commission on Glass was asked to develop an analytical method to be used as a standardised procedure in the analysis of sulphide sulphur in glass without altering its original redox equilibria. In this procedure, sulphide sulphur is liberated from the glass with a mixture of hydrofluoric and sulphuric acid and carried by a stream of nitrogen into a silver nitrate absorption solution. After filtration, sulphide sulphur is determined by measuring the excess of silver by flame atomic absorption spectrometry. eleven laboratories took part in the collaborative investigation carried out on a amber soda lime glass. A mean value of 60.6 mu g S2-/kg was obtained, the corresponding coefficient of variance was 8.7%. The determination limit was estimated as 15 mu g S2-/kg of glass.
