James H Nicoll is a little known figure in the history of surgery. Yet, this Glasgow surgeon was a pioneer, particularly in the care of the infant patient both in hospital and after discharge. A great teacher and innovator, he developed effective techniques for the surgical cure of pyloric stenosis of infancy and for the outpatient post-operative care of children with spina bifida.
