Orchard performance of 'Chandler' walnut on selected Juglans regia seedling rootstocks

Growth and productivity of 'Chandler' trees propagated on selected J. regia seedling rootstocks were evaluated at two sites near Linden, California. Site 1 was planted in 1989, and included 'Chandler' trees nursery grafted on open-pollinated seedlings of 'Manregian', 'Eureka', "Spanish", 'Ronde de Montignac' and 'Corne'. Rootstocks at site 2, planted in 1994, included seedlings of 'Eureka', 'Waterloo', 'Chandler', and 'Sunland' seedlings from a California nursery, two additional J. regia sources named 'Russian' and 'Carpathian' by their respective suppliers, and Paradox hybrid seedlings from a California source. Growth and productivity were similar among J. regia sources trees at site 1. At site 2, Paradox-rooted trees grew larger and had greater nut production than J. regia rooted trees in most years.
