The Preparation of a Novel AKD Emulsion and Its Application

In this paper, self-made cationic polymers as emulsifier to emulsify AKD (alkyl ketene dimmer) wax was studied, and the effects of different cationic polymers ratio to cationic starch in compound emulsifier on the characterizations of AKD emulsion was discussed. The results showed that the AKD emulsion had better stability and dispersibility when the ratio of self-made emulsifier and cationic starch of compound emulsifier was 3:1. Comparing to the traditional AKD emulsion With cationic starch as emulsifier, the self-made novel AKD emulsion had prominent advantages such as shorter curing time and higher sizing degree of handsheets. In the experiments, some chemicals were used to increase the AKD sizing efficiency; it was found that adding PAE, PAC and NaHCO(3) could give higher sizing degree of handsheets. Some conditions affecting AKD sizing such as drying temperature and drying time were also discussed.
