? Ankle arthrodesis can give good clinical results, but there is strong evidence in the literature that over time the adjacent joints will develop degenerative changes, which could lead to significant secondary morbidity. ? Extending the fusion to a pantalar fusion has limited appeal because it severely limits function, and does not guarantee pain relief. ? Takedown of an ankle fusion and conversion to a total ankle replacement seems to be a reasonable approach in the correct environment. ? Absence of a distal fibula is a strong contraindication for a conversion to a TAA.
