Tradition and Modernity: Community Bands in Campos dos Goytacazes, RJ

This article has as its main theme the centenary musical societies in Campos dos Goytacazes (RJ) and proposes, from a historical tour of its origins in the Municipality, to reflect from the field of cultural policiesabout the social character of these institutions in the present time. In this sense, we seek to understand the processes of identity formation of the musicians woven in the spaces of production of local culture, while at the same time we aim to understand the processes of memory construction that give support to the survival of these musical groups. The permanence of Community Bands in the musical scene of the Municipality expresses its capacity to assimilate modernity as a form of resistance, without losing the elements that structure them: identity, memory and solidarity.
