The reradiation of electromagnetic waves by thin metal rods with transverse slots

It is shown that slots in a thin conductor may substantially change the phase of the current excited by an incident electromagnetic wave. At a certain slot width, the current amplitude reaches its maximum, which maximizes the scattering cross section. This resonance occurs at an arbitrary rod diameter. In the case of gratings, the reflections at resonance frequencies become total for a high geometric transparency. It is shown that the resonance phenomenon depends only slightly on the conductivity of the rod material.
