摘要：

Dutch possessions in Southeast Asia at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries are described in the article. The core components of the mechanism of indirect administration of overseas territories are identified based on the memoirs written by Princess Olga A. Shcherbatova, Modest M. Bakunin, Russian consul in Batavia, botanist Vladimir M. Arnoldi (they all visited Java) as well as on famous works of Dutch artistic literature. The author shows the role of the Orientalism - a certain system of views with number of important distinctive features in Dutch colonial policy in this region - in successful implementation of the imperial plans for the mother country in Dutch India.
