BRUNO GENTILI IN THE MEMOIR OF AN AMERICAN HOMERIST

The author recalls his first contact with Bruno Gentili who published in 1969 an italian translation of his essay (written in collaboration with Bennett Simon) about the interrelation between performer and audience in Greek epic poetry. This was very similar to the connection made by Gentili between performer, audience and commissioner" in Greek lyric poetry. The Institute of Classical Philology in Urbino and the journal Quaderni Urbinati di Cultura Classica were the place and the organ for the diffusion of the new ideas. R. remembers his visits in Urbino, the meetings with italian and foreign colleagues, in a perfect combination of colleagueship and personal friendship.
