The triple point of mercury is one of the defining fixed points used in the International Temperature Scale of 1990 (ITS-90) and is assigned the value of 234.3156 K (-38.8344 degrees C). Cells designed to realize the triple point of mercury have been fabricated and filled using various methods. This paper reviews some construction methods and evaluates observed differences in cell properties between cells filled by vacuum distillation of the mercury metal sample into a stainless steel envelope and cells prepared by evacuating an otherwise identical cell envelope filled with metal sample at atmospheric pressure.
